In Ding Yi’s view, the canvas is not a screen, but a limited three-dimensional matrix space. Born in Shanghai in 1962, he is one of the most distinguished artists in the field of global abstract art today. More than 30 years of his creation, the exploration of ‘+, cross-stitching’ becomes his most iconic symbol interpreted in his artistic language.
Abstract Art from Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky developed over a century, and it has emerged lots of prominent artists in the peak of each era. In 2010 autumns, comprehensive art curator Weng Ling had a dialogue with Ding Yi recorded in his studio for the Arts China. The minimalist art from the West to a unique paradigm of the East, his ingenious declaration was driven by the proactive integration to enter the mainstream of the evaluation system beneath the social development, till insisted his attitude serving in the marginal region. Weng Ling has requested the internal sense of art composition throughout their dialogue, by capturing ‘the vision out of image’ to audiences from the art of Ding Yi.
