3 on the Bund in Shanghai, as China’s first amalgamation of contemporary art, culture, fashion, and lifestyle, marked the inaugural phase of the Bund’s revitalization and transformation. Its groundbreaking renovation not only preserved the building’s past splendor but also radiated the charm of 1930s Shanghai as the Oriental metropolis, where fashion and elegance coexisted. From comprehensive planning and design, diverse business formats, operational management, to the seamless integration with contemporary art, Bund No. 3 has forged an irreplaceable avant-garde status, becoming Shanghai’s foremost international cultural and lifestyle landmark.
At the heart of Bund No. 3 lies Hu Shen Gallery, the soul of the entire building. The 35-meter-high atrium, serving as the central space, traverses the entire structure. Through the promotion of various forms of contemporary art, including painting, sculpture, installations, film, environmental art, and architecture, Hu Shen Gallery has conducted a scholarly exploration of China’s contemporary art history. Under the leadership of Weng Ling, Hu Shen Gallery during that period stood as the spiritual core of Shanghai and globally showcased the most authoritative and influential professional art institution representing China’s contemporary art.
