Qianmen, also known as Zhengyangmen, held the distinguished position as the foremost of the nine gates within the inner city of Beijing during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Beyond Qianmen, it has evolved into a convergence of Old Beijing’s architectural culture, mercantile culture, pear garden culture, guild culture, and folk culture, enduring the vicissitudes of 600 years, and embodying the sentiments and dreams of countless individuals.
Situated at the southeast corner of Tiananmen Square, the Qianmen East District is the largest remaining old hutong area in the center of Beijing, awaiting transformation and revitalization. In 2014, Weng Ling and her team, invited by the government, collaborated with domestic and international architectural masters and interdisciplinary experts to conduct a comprehensive survey, research, planning, and design for the 900,000-square-meter area of Qianmen East District. They synthesized a comprehensive set of professional plans for preservation, renovation, and transformation.
